Visits to the Prison

Since March 1987 our mobile library, the "Bibliobús Bertolt Brecht", leaves Managua in many directions all aournd Nicaragua. Every time the bus arrives at the front gate of one of the prisons in Matagalpa, Chinandega, Granada or La Esperanza (Ticuantepe), the mood among the prisoners rises, as the bus literally brings some colours into the greyish routine of the small cells.

There's a friendly treatment between our staff, the prison guards and the prisoners. Once we brought a painter some colours, a pair of shoes for another prisoner or simply paper for letters, the prisoners use to write. Sometimes we recieve letters from the prisoners and take them to their families.

The prisoners are very eager to learn. They prefer non-fiction books in order to continue their education. They ask for books that deal with difficulties of life, knowing oneself, pyscology, religion, philosophy and further education. Amazingly, many of them also like to read poems by national authors. There is a special selection of literature for the women's prison in order to make it easier for the women to re-integrate in society. Most prisoners can already read and write when they are released. In order to get to know their wishes and notions better, we have elaboarted a quastionnaire.

Visits to rural communities and schools

Niquinohomo/Los Pocitos, C. A. Sandino's birth place , is the place we've had very special relations with for at least 15 years. We've seen many of the students grwo up, some got and get technical education thanks to our financial support.

Our mobile library also visits technical schools like the Escuela Taller de Granada. The school can be found in the ancient train station of the former colonial city. Since 2005 the military school, Academia Militar, is among the institutions visited by our bibliobús.

The only public school our bus is visiting at the moment, is the primary school Reino de España in Tipitapa, north of Managua.

Everey year our bus takes part in the activities of the International Day of the Children's Book Hans Christian Andersen. The children are keen readers, inside and outside the bus.

Until November 2005 our bus covered 10,803 kilometres, that is 808 more than the year before (9,995 km). At 100 (119) visits we were able to rech 7,143 (7,912) users. 11,840 (12,068) books have been requested.
