COMMUNITY SERVICE ABROAD

The Community Service Abroad (ADiA)

Young people have the opportunity to collaborate on our project at their own expenses. Young men, who are acknowledged conscientious objectors, can commit theirselves for at least 11 months. Their service will then be recognized as a Community Service Abroad (ADiA) according to section 14b ZDG. The volunteer will no longer be obliged to do community service in Germany. More information can be found here (in German only).

Due to the lack of resources we can not pay any salaries to our volunteers. Transport and costs of living have to assumed by them. At the moment, a flight to Nicaragua (from Germany) costs around
€ 1.000,-, live might cost the volunteer around € 250,- per month. A european lifestyle will be much more expensive!

During his service, the volunteer will recieve the family allowance. For the duration of the service the association "Ein Bücherbus in Nicaragua e.V." assumes the assurance premiums for the health insurance and the social security. The staff will also help the volunteer find a place to stay. The library administration pays the volunteers a daily amount for lunch (working days only).
Entry to Nicaragua is easiest with a tourist card that is available at Managua Airport for USD 5,-. Later, a long-term visa can be obtained throughout the German embassy.

The volunteers work...

... consists in the attention of visitors and the selection of books. The volunteer should support the library staff, returning books to their place and keep the archives in order. This support is most important during the anual inventory. The volunteer will also be in charge of smaller administrative tasks and do fisical work in the environment of the library. His main task should be to continue the English classes that we have been offering for one year now.
Therefore the volunteer should speak Spanish fluently. Resistance - not only to heat - and joy at the work with children are further requested. The driver's license and knowledge on the work with the computer (website) would be of advantage.

There is the possibility to develop one's own initiative, e.G. in the work with children. At the moment our volunteers are organising a chess tournament for children and have many more ideas left, yet.
We would be glad if the volunteer was able to show the children how to play the guitar, th flute or other instruments (instruments are in the library).
