Book presentation (17.07.2006)

Next Friday, us-american writer hoy Baron L. Pineda will be presenting his book "Shipwrecked Identities" in the lecture-hall of the library. Pineda is an assistant professor of anthropology at Oberlin College in Ohio (USA). The book, published in 2006, deals with the nicaraguan atlantic coast and the history of its population.

The German Nicaraguan Library invites everyone interested to assist the presentation. The event starts at 6:30 p.m., entrance is free.

Exhibition of engravement on aluminium and paper (20.06.2006)

Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, the German Nicaraguan Library will be opening its doors for the exhibition of works of arts made by young students from the barrio Los Martínez. The exhibition of engravements on aluminium and paper will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday and from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 m. on Saturday.

The works presented have already been presented in an earlier exhibition realized in the Banco Central de Nicaragua. Our employee Luis Barberena also figures among the artists.

Children's choir (08.06.2006)

Yesterday our volunteers started their new project: the children's choir. The choir, which until now has six members (two boys and four girls) will meet every wednesday throughout the next three months. We hope for higher participation during the coming weeks. In case there is major interest en succes, the project will prolonged another three months.

The main goal of the choir is to make the children have fun and at the same time bring music and rhythmical habilities closer to them.


For the statistics (01.06.2006)

Since the beginning of the year, more than 8,000 people have come to our library. Until May the 8,302 users occupied 10,201 books.

In the same period our mobile library was able to rech 2,999 users giving them access to 5,071 books.


Our driver Reyvil celebrates his 50 years! (25.05.2006)

Today our driver Reyvil is celebrating his 50th anniversary. After it had been wrongly celebrated last year, his colleagues wished him happy returns once more today.

Reyvil is the first employee of the project and accompanys his bibliobús since 1986.

The Biblioteca says: "Happy Birthday!"


Donators in the Library (16.05.2006)

It was 27 the number of donators and Pan y Arte Germany board members who visited the Library yesterday. It was the second visit that the german association made this year. The president of the Nicaraguan German Culture Association welcomed the visitors and thanked the donators for their support. The movie "Bücher bauen Brücken" (Books build Bridges), by Peter Klein, was shown. He was among the visitors, too. Afterwards the volunteers and director Teresa Chávez guided the visitors through the building answering their questions. For unkown reasons, Mr. Dietmar Schönherr did not assist to the event yesterday. Nevertheless we wish him many happy returns on his 80th anniversary!

Later, Mrs. Schnauer handed over to Teresa Chávez five sets of felt-pens that will be used in our Sala Infantil. "It was an offer, they were cheap. So I bought them. Maybe I'd find someone who could make use of them.", said the enthusiastic donator.


Pan y Arte visiting the library (05.05.2006)

Once more Pan y Arte donators will be visiting our library. The association's second visit in this year will take place on May 15 at 10:00 a.m.. This time the Pan y Arte Germany committee will be present, too. The visit is being realized just two days before Dietmar Schönherr's 80th birthday, to be celebrated on May 20 in the Casa de los Tres Mundos in Granada. Dietmar Schönherr is a committee member and founder of Pan y Arte. We'll use his visit as an opprtunity to give Mr. Schönherr a small reception at our library.

Elisabeth went home (03.05.2006)

Last Sunday, April 30, Elisabeth left Nicaragua once more, heading for Germany in order to continue her work for the project. Anyway, she'll be back soon. In November the library staff will welcome her back in Nicaragua.

Spanish translation (03.05.2006)

Yesterday we were able to upload the first part of the spanish translation of this webpage. Ten of the fourteen categories can be seen in German and Spanish language. The others will be following soon!

New webseite (29.04.2006)

Since today (28. April 2006) our new website is being online. Our volunteer Christian has been working on it the last weeks and months, in order to update the contents of the site. We kept design and structure ofe the page and changed only little details. The Spanish and English translation are still in process. Enjoy this page!

The search is over

The search for an appropiate successor for the free space in the Sala Infantil is over. Since April, Daysi Maria Mairena Silva (25) is taking care of the children who come to visit the library.

The new volunteer has arrived!

Not long ago, Elena from Greven (Germany) started work in our library. She's an EIRENE - volunteer and had already been working in Nicaragua for six months, before she came to Managua. She'll stay with us for the next twelve months.

Volunteers needed !

We're looking for new volunteers for the next year, who'd like to work abroad and enjoy working with peolpe and books. We recieve applications all over the year. There's more information in the section "ADiA".


Concert in the library

The German-Nicaraguan music group IrBaRa invites everyone to their conert on April 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Biblioteca Alemana Nicaragüense. The entry is free!

The International Day of the Children's Book

Celebrating the Birthday of the danish author and children's book writer Hans Christian Andersen (1805 - 1875), the International Day of the Children's Book will be kept in Jinotepe on April 2.

Chess in the library

In co-operation with the Asociación Sonrisa y Esperanza de los Niños, our volunteer is organizing a Chess tournament for children. It will take place from June 1 until June 3 in the library, celebrating the International Children's Week. Children between 10 and 14 years of age from the nearest schools and social institutions are invited to participate.

The main goal of the event is promote logical thinking and ancourage them to play chess. We're still looking for sponsors for the event. We're expecting up to 70 participants.

The library is making its own book

In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the project, our emplyee and driver Reyvil Cuarezma has passed its history in review and summarized his experiences with "his bibliobús" in a small book. This book is still being worked out and shall be published next year in German and Spanish language, on time for the celebration. A second part should later conatain the history of the library, too.

Puppet theatre


Due to its succes during the vacations and its popularity with the children we took up again the puppet theatre activity for children.

Twice a week the children meet in our Sala Infantil where our employee Luis shows them how to make their own puppets. Further more, the children are asked to write and read out their own stories they want to perform later. Participation is not high yet, but we are expecting more interest in the future.


A small anniversary

On March 16 the library celebrated its 5th anniversary of the existence in its own building. With a small number of guests, the staff celebrated the jubilee. The movie "Bücher bauen Brücken" (Books build bridges), by Peter Klein, was shown. The movie will be soon available in Germany. The association "Ein Bücherbus in Nicaragua e.V." already offers a movie made by Jaska Klocke. Jaska, high school student, has worked in the library twice, in summers 2004 and 2005.


Changing staff 2006

Towards the end of January Carolina left the library. She'd been in charge of the Sala Infantil the year before. She's now moving to Germany, where her sister lives. We wish her well and good luck! We're now looking for an appropiate successor. At the beginning of the year Teodora started her work at the counter. She had been working with us occasionally before.

Visitors from Germany

In February a small group of Pan y Arte donators visited our library. Since 2004 the Münster association figures among our supporters. The visitors were able to have a glimpse behinde the scenes and asked Elisabeth lots of questions. (www.panyarte.org)

A group of donators from Frankfurt/Main, twin town of Granada, had already visited us last year in November. The town twinning has been supporting the library transporting books from Germany to Nicaragua. (www.staedtefreundschaft-frankfurt-granada.de)


The new Zivi has arrived!

Since October 2005, Christian helps the library staff doing his social service. The volunteer from Hamburg will mainly give English classes and take care of the website.
